Government Must Rule Out Nuclear Energy
to Focus On Renewable
Tony Blair has announced the terms of an energy review that he hopes will lead
to the building of a new generation of nuclear power stations. The Prime
Minister has insisted he has not pre-judged the inquiry, saying that it will be
a hard-headed look at the pros and cons of replacing the 14 existing power
stations. Mr Blair’s speech was disrupted by Greenpeace protesters whose demands
to make a 10-minute speech led to the Prime Minister’s speech being moved to a
smaller room.
Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Tooting,
Stephanie Dearden said:-
The suspicion must be that Tony Blair has
already decided to advocate an increase in the use of nuclear power. This review
will serve little purpose if the Prime Minister has already made up his mind.
What is needed is to rule out an extension of nuclear power now. This will
provide the certainty that the industry so desperately needs, and will allow us
to focus on cleaner renewable energy.
